Background of the Study
Nurses play a pivotal role in the healthcare of elderly patients, yet their perceptions of the specific healthcare needs of this demographic can vary based on experience, education, and exposure to geriatric care. In Kano State, where the elderly population is growing, understanding nurses' perceptions of elderly patients' needs is critical for ensuring that these needs are met in an effective and compassionate manner. Nurses' understanding of age-related challenges such as mobility issues, cognitive decline, chronic diseases, and the psychosocial aspects of aging can influence the care provided. Studies have shown that improving nurses' perceptions and education regarding the healthcare needs of elderly patients leads to better care and improved outcomes (Aliyu & Sani, 2024). This study aims to explore nurses’ perceptions of elderly patients' healthcare needs in Kano State to identify areas where education and training can enhance geriatric care.
Statement of the Problem
In Kano State, the rapidly growing elderly population may not be receiving optimal healthcare due to gaps in nurses' perceptions of their unique healthcare needs. Misunderstandings about the nature of aging and its associated challenges may result in inadequate care and unaddressed health concerns. This study will assess nurses' perceptions of the healthcare needs of elderly patients and explore how these perceptions influence the quality of care provided.
Objectives of the Study
To assess nurses' perceptions of the healthcare needs of elderly patients in Kano State.
To identify factors influencing nurses' perceptions of elderly care.
To recommend strategies for improving nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward the healthcare needs of elderly patients in Kano State.
Research Questions
What are nurses' perceptions of the healthcare needs of elderly patients in Kano State?
What factors influence nurses' perceptions of elderly patients' healthcare needs in Kano State?
How do nurses' perceptions affect the quality of care provided to elderly patients in Kano State?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses with more experience in geriatric care have more accurate perceptions of elderly patients' healthcare needs.
Misconceptions about aging and geriatric care are associated with lower quality of care for elderly patients.
Nurses who receive training on elderly care are more likely to have positive perceptions of the healthcare needs of elderly patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in both public and private healthcare facilities in Kano State. Limitations include the potential for bias in self-reported data from nurses, and the study will not assess other healthcare providers' perceptions.
